Subhash Ghai, famously known as the 'Showman', was born on January 24th 1945 in Punjab. After completing his studies in Haryana, Subhash Ghai enrolled at ‘FTII- Film and Television Institute of India’. After completing his filmmaking course, he came to Mumbai to persue his passion for movie direction. Subhash Ghai got his directorial break ‘Kalicharan’ in 1976 with his friend Shatrughan Sinha and the movie went on to become a superhit. Subhash’s next two movies were ‘Vishwanath’ and ‘Gautam Govinda’.
In 1978, Subhash Ghai got married and formed his Company Mukta Arts. The first movie under his banner ‘Karz’ starring Rishi Kapoor became a hit as well. In 1982, Subhash Ghai directed ‘Vidhaata’ with some of the biggest names in the industry-Dilip Kumar, Shammi Kapoor and Sanjeev Kumar, and the movie was so appreciated by the audiences that it is regarded as one of the classics.
Subhash Ghai’s banner Mukta Arts kept going stronger with every release and the next movie ‘Hero’ with Jackie Shroff was also a success at the box-office and so was ‘Meri Jung’ which saw Anil Kapoor in the lead. Subash Ghai was at the peak of his career and his next movie titled ‘Karma’ saw Dilip Kumar, Naseeruddin Shah, Jackie Shroff and Anil Kapoor in the leads with Anupam Kher as the villain; the movie became a blockbuster and the filmmaker even won a National Award for ‘Karma’.
Subhash Ghai continued his successful journey with ‘Ram Lakhan’, ‘Saudagar’, ‘Khalnayak’, ‘Pardes’ and ‘Taal’. In 2000, Subhash Ghai’s company Mukta Arts Pvt Limited went Public listed on ‘Bombay Stock Exchange’ and his daughter Meghna Ghai became the director of the company.
In 2001, he launched ‘Yaadien’ with Hrithik Roshan and Kareena Kapoor; the movie failed at the box-office and so did his next ‘Kisna’, which was a bigger flop. People commented on the Showman that he had lost his Midas touch. Subhash Ghai has however; been very successful as a Producer and he has also launched his Film Academy-‘Whistling Woods’.
Subhash Ghai was superstitious about the alphabet ‘M’ and worked only with actresses whose names started with that alphabet, like Meenakshi, Madhuri, Manisha and Mahima. Subhash Ghai has often been accused of sexually exploiting his actresses, but the filmmaker has denied all such rumors. Subhash Ghai’s success record has been marvelous as he has managed to give a slew of blockbusters in his career.
