A star was born on October 10th 1954 in Chennai, India and she was named Rekha. As a child Rekha had her share of problems, as her father Gemini Ganesan was not married to her mother a Telugu actress Pushpavalli. Rekha’s mother forced her into acting when she was only twelve. After gaining success in South, Rekha moved on to Hindi Industry, but she had to struggle to get her foothold.
Rekha first attained real fame in 1978 with ‘Muqaddar Ka Sikandar’, in which she co-starred with Big B. She went on to co-star with Amitabh in a number of 1980’s hits. The most scandalous of them was ‘Silsila’, in which she played Amitabh's love interest and Jaya Bhaduri played Amitabh's wife. She also starred in classic ‘Umrao Jaan’. The film is considered one of her best performances. The actress also received the National Film Award for Best Actress for the movie. After winning critical acclaim for her role in ‘Muqaddar Ka Sikandar’ and ‘Umrao Jaan’, which portrayed her as a courtesan with a heart of gold, the actress started opting for similar roles in other movies.
Rekha was also strongly rumored to be Amitabh's real-life flame and the film column gossip sure contributed to her success. Rekha impressed the critics, who had to admit that the actress had worked hard not only to perfect her Hindi and her acting skills, but also had impressed everyone as she transformed herself from a ‘plump’ duckling to a ‘swan’. Rekha credits this transformation to yoga, a nutritious diet, and a regular, disciplined life.
