Bappi Lahiri is one of the biggest musicians of the Indian Industry. He is of Bengali origin and is fondly called Bappi da, ‘da’ means brother in Bengali. Bappi has inherited the musical legacy from his father Aparesh Lahiri, who was a famous Bengali singer and his mother Bansari Lahiri was a musician.
Bappi da started playing the tabla when he was barely three years old. After getting trained by his parents, Bappi Da set his foot in Bollywood when he was nineteen and a break thorough came in career after he composed music for ‘Zakhmee’ starring Sunil Dutt.
Bappi was famous for his style as he used a lot of western instruments and beats in his music. Disco Dancer made him popular amongst the youth. Bappi was also inspired by many International hits and was accused of lifting tunes.
Kishore Kumar was Bappi da’s favorite singer as he did justice to the fast songs composed by him. Bappi shot to fame with his music in ‘Namak Halal’ called “Raat Baki” followed by a song from ‘Saahib’ calles “Yaar bina chain kahan re”. He made disco music popular with songs like “Disco Station” and “Koi Yaha Nache, Nache”. Bappi da loves wearing gold chains and rings and was complimented by Michael Jackson for his style.
In 2002, Bappi da sued International Group Truth Hurts for lifting his tune “Thodsa resham lagta hai”. After lying low for a decade, Bappi da made a comeback with “Bombai Nagariya” which became a rage. Bappi’s son Bappa Lahiri is also following his dad’s footsteps and is an upcoming musician.
