Babul Supriyo was born as Supriyo Baral in Kolkata. His grandfather Banikantha NC Baral was a famous Bengali vocalist and his dad Rai Chand Baral was one of the acclaimed composers. Babul trained in music under the guidance of both his grandfather and dad and from a very young age he started performing at concerts.
Babul was a bright student at school and his degree fetched him a job at Standard Chartered Bank, but his heart always yearned for music so he followed his heart and he left for Mumbai. Babul didn’t get a big break and was crooning for cover versions of Kishore Kumar’s songs. The singer got his first break in ‘Ekka Raja Rani’ in 1994, but the music didn’t quite get that popular.
Babul couldn’t create his own identity and many thought that he was copying Kumar Sanu’s singing style. Babul was given a break by Kalyanji-Anandji as he toured with them and Amitabh Bachchan for their foreign concert in US and Canada. While performing at the concert, he met his wife Riaa in Toronto and got married to her in July 1995.
Babul’s career was revived by Rakesh Roshan, who gave him a chance in blockbuster ‘Kaho Na Pyaar Hai’ in which he sang the famous “Dil Ne Dil Ko Pukara” all the way to success. Babul also became the father of a daughter Sharmilee the very same year. The singer finally got his dues as he rendered his voice for projects like ‘Mujhe Kuch Kehna Hai’, ‘Hungama’, ‘Hum Tum’, ‘Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya’, ‘Fanaa’ and ‘Krrish’. Babul also lost 24 kgs to feature in his pop video, which was shot in Greece along with Miss India Niharika.
Despite being exploited at the hands of producers, who used to pay him just Rs. 5000 ($110) for a song, Babul continues to support them in the fight between musicians and Producers on issues related to music rights. This has caused him to break up with his longtime friend Sonu Nigam.
Babul also separated with his wife Riaa in 2006; the two are not officially divorced. Babul is currently working on his acting debut and also plans to host a music show on TV. Patience and conviction have finally paid off for the talented Babul, who struggled for almost for a decade to finally create his identity.
