Anu Malik is one of the most talented names in the Bollywood music world. Despite being the son of famous musician Sardar Malik, Anu had to struggle for a long time before he got his first break at the age of 16 in a movie titled ‘Poonam’. Anu Malik feels that his main source of inspiration has been his dad’s failure as he always wanted to be successful and rich.
Anu came in the mainstream with the music of his third movie ‘Aapas Ki Baat’, but Anu had to struggle a lot as the 80’s belonged to RD Burman and Laxmikant Pyarelal. Anu got lucky when he was asked to compose for Big B starrer ‘Mard’, but that didn’t take him too far and it took this music director almost a decade to get recognized in Bollywood; it was Shahrukh Khan’s ‘Baazigar’ that made him a star and then, there was no looking back as he delivered a spree of successful movies.
Anu Malik has been alleged of picking foreign tunes and compiling them for his movie. Bangladeshi rock group ‘Miles’ had also filed a suit against him for lifting their tune. Anu Malik won his first National Award for ‘Refugee’. His songs have also been selected by many International movies-his famous song “Chamma, Chamma” from ‘China Gate’ was compiled in Nicole Kidman’s ‘Moulin Rouge’ and “Chunari Chunari” from ‘Biwi No 1’ found it’s way to Mira Nair’s ‘Monsoon Wedding’.
Anu Malik has two younger brothers Daboo and Abu Malik, who are also part of tinsel town. Anu Malik also judges the famous reality show ‘Indian Idol’ on Sony TV. Anu bounced back in 2006 as he composed for the biggest movies ‘Jaan-E-Mann’, ‘Zindagi Rocks’ and ‘Umrao Jaan’.
Anu is married to Anju and has two lovely daughters-his younger daughter Anmol made her singing debut in ‘Umrao Jaan’. Anu Malik may be accused of plagiarism, but it’s his sheer talent that has carried him along for more than 25 years in Bollywood and he for sure is rated as one of the most successful music directors in the business.
